In 2013, the Exploratorium relocated to a new $220 million location at Pier 15. VCO worked with the EHDD and the Exploratorium to complete the 330,000 square foot project. The new design intent was to provide an environment that incorporated natural light, fresh air, and spectacular bay views to foster a collaborative environment for the team. The workspace consists of over 400 scientists, artists, educators, exhibit developers, designers, and writers. VCO felt it was important to receive input from the staff and reassure the new workspaces would support the unique culture and diverse activities of the employees. The Exploratorium received LEED platinum certification and became the largest museum to operate at a net-zero energy cost.
